Spellings

Spelling is a very important skill for children because it helps them become confident readers and writers. In Key Stage 2, children move beyond basic phonics and begin to learn more complex rules, including spelling patterns, prefixes and suffixes, how words are constructed, common exception words and word families. They are also encouraged to check and improve their own spelling through proofreading and using dictionaries.

Helping your child with spelling at home is a great way to build their confidence and support their learning in school. Your child will have a GoogleClassroom login that they will use to access their weekly spellings to practise at home so that they have the best possible chance of being committed to their long-term memory. It is also worth going back to previous spellings periodically to check that these words and patterns have been retained.
