Medical
Illness or injury during the school day
If your child develops a high temperature or is sick during the day, we will contact you so that your child may be taken home. Cuts and grazes from playground falls are dealt with by the school’s first aiders, but if a more serious injury is suspected, parents and carers will be contacted.
Please ensure that we have up-to-date contact details for you and at least one other emergency contact.
Stomach upset (vomiting and diarrhoea)
If your child has been sick or has diarrhoea, they should not attend school. They may return only after they have been symptom-free (no vomiting or diarrhoea) for 48 hours. This helps prevent infections such as norovirus from spreading to other children and staff.
First aid
We have a number of trained first aiders on the school site at all times who undertake regular training updates. Our first aid policy is on our policies page.
Medicines in school
We will administer medicines that have been prescribed by a doctor or dentist during the school day. Medicines should always be provided in the original container as dispensed by a pharmacist and which include the prescriber's instructions for administration. Parents/ carers must let the school know in writing the time(s) at which the medicine should be taken. Medicines must be handed in to the school office with a completed 'consent to administer medication' form. You can download a copy below, or paper copies are available from the school office.
Under exceptional circumstances the school will administer non-prescription medicines such as liquid paracetamol. Please speak to our medical lead Mrs Wells, through the school office if you wish to discuss this. Our policy on medicines in school is on our policies page.
Staff are not able to apply sun cream.
School nursing service
School Nursing is a universal ill health prevention and health promotion service offered to all children and their families, from school entry. It is delivered in schools, community settings and, occasionally, within the home (our school nurse is based at the Burgess Hill Clinic).
